The house is in a rural location, between 3 interesting towns – St Aulaye, Chalais and Aubeterre-sur-Dronne. As well as enjoying the peace, views, privacy and pool at the house, there
is easy access to lots of other more energetic activities - here are some ideas!
Horseriding - the house is 'next door' (200m away across the valley) to a pony club offering
local hacks.
Canoeing - hire is available from St Aulaye and Aubeterre, offering day and half-day options in single or family canoes.
River Swimming - Aubeterre and St Aulaye each have safe, monitored beaches for swimming (with imported golden sand) and beach cafes, play areas, boules etc. St Aulaye also offers a Tarzan course and water
slide.
French Markets - It's almost possible to visit a different authentic market every day of the week in this area - where you can buy the local specialities of fois
gras, cheeses, pineau (local fortified wine), melon and even fresh oysters from the nearby Bordeaux coast. Riberac on Friday and Chalais on Monday are particularly good.
Cycling
and Walking - The area is covered with quiet tracks and minor roads ideal for exploring by foot or bike (we have 3 mountain bikes at the house and you can hire others locally or try this site to order more: www.bikehiredirect.com ).
Lakes - a number of swimming lakes are in easy reach (Lac de Jamaye and Parcoul), offering more opportuities for hiring water craft (canoes or pedaloes), sandy beaches and water-front
cafes.
Golf - 9-hole Club near Aubeterre.
Fishing - in the River Dronne and local lakes. Permits available in local shops.
Culture - The region boasts lots of Roman Churches and the famous
monolithic subterranean church in Aubeterre. Chalais has a chateau and there is also a beautiful convent nearby that makes a famous local cheese flavoured with nut liquer and a local Pineau, wine and sparkling wine manufacturer where you can buy direct.
